CAREER DAY

Annually, alumnae return to mentor current Jesters as a part of Career Day. Alumnae are invited to speak to groups of students who have expressed interest in a particular field. On March 12, 2010 Career Day will be celebrated in conjunction with Saint Joseph Day. This day concludes with a special all school mass and luncheon. If you are interested in participating, please contact Debbie Haley or Jean Parkins, at ext. 173.

Celebrating St. Joseph/Career Day

Most days are very full at SJHS. Saint Joseph Day was no exception. The day began with the blessing of a new statue of Mother St. John Fontbonne followed by a St. Joseph Day Liturgy celebrated by San Pedro Regional Bishop, Alex Salazar. Sisters of St. Joseph renewed their vows, as is their tradition. Brunch, a concert by Dr. Iven, and Career Day presentations by alumnae and friends of the school followed the Liturgy.

The statue of Mother St. John Fontbonne rests at the northwest end of the campus. The Sisters of St. Joseph founded in LePuy, France, by Jesuit Fr. Jean Pierre Medaille in the mid 1600’s began as six ordinary women joined together in community. They were neither educated nor wealthy but worked to support themselves by making lace, a trade from that region of France, and they worked to meet the needs of ordinary people. The community grew. Later political turmoil at the time of the French Revolution led to the disbandment of the community. Mother St. John Fontbonne, a woman who barely escaped the guillotine, refounded the Sisters of St. John at Lyon, France in 1807.

In 1836 Sisters of St. Joseph came to the United States to teach the deaf near St. Louis, Missouri. Thus the Sisters grew and spread out across the United States and eventually to Hawaii, Japan, Peru, Chile and most recently to Uganda. Today, approximately 1,520 members of the CSJ community continue to dedicate themselves to the “practice of all the spiritual and corporal works of mercy of which woman is capable and which will most benefit the dear neighbor.”
