Selection Process
Previous and prospective team members are selected on ability and on attitude that must be cooperative for a team unit. The selection process of a prospective team member is done by observance of the student from her previous season and a tryout period. No one is guaranteed a position on a team because of past participation. For CIF sports, a 10-day tryout period prior to the start of the season is allowed for those athletes who have not previously played that sport at our school on any level. Returning athletes begin their tryout on the first day of allowable practice sanctioned by the CIF. Students who quit at any time will not be eligible to receive their athletic letter and cannot return to that squad/team at any time.
Athletic Fees and Requirements
The school athletic fee is $150 per team per student. If siblings participate on athletic teams on three or more sports teams, the fee is $400. This fee is non-refundable. In addition to the athletic fees, the following items are required before a student may actively participate in the athletic season:
SJHS Student Athlete’s Contract (See Appendix for copy of form);
SJHS Parent Sportsmanship Agreement (See Appendix for copy of form);
Athletic Trip Permission and Transportation Release Forms;
Informed Consent Form;
Student Athlete Physical Examination Form; and
Athletic Emergency Health and Medical Consent Form
Off Campus Athletic and Activities Transportation
Many activities, competitions and athletic events (i.e., practices and games) are held off campus. Transportation is provided for many of these events. However, practices and some tournaments require that each student find her own means of transportation. In the event a student needs to arrive at a competition or a practice on her own, she may only drive herself. Whenever two or more students require transportation, an adult must drive these students to and from the event. Permission slips will be provided and the driver will need to submit his/her driver's license and automobile insurance. Adult drivers must be at least 25 years of age, possess a Class C driver’s license and be insured (A $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident minimum limit of Liability for Bodily Injury and Property Damage is the minimum recommended coverage limit for archdiocesan purposes.). One seat belt must be provided for and used by each vehicle occupant. Copies of the driver’s license and certificate of insurance must be on file in the office.
When bus transportation is provided, all students must ride the bus to and from the athletic and/or school sponsored event, unless prior arrangements have been made with the athletic director or moderator for a parent(s)/guardian(s) to drive his/her daughter home from an event. These arrangements must be made in writing 24 hours in advance.
Transportation is usually provided for all away athetic competitions.
Off-On Campus Athletic Supervision
The cross country and track teams begin their daily practice on campus, or at St. John Bosco High School. Since these are distance competitions, their daily runs take them off campus into the surrounding neighborhoods within a few miles of SJHS or SJBHS with adult supervision. Practice locations are subject to change, and parents/guardians will be notified.
Every coach is responsible to remain with his/her team or squad until the last student is picked up by a parent/guardian. No student should ever be left unsupervised on campus. If a student is left unsupervised, parents/guardians are asked to contact the Athletic Director or the Assistant Principal for Activities/Operations.
Coaches
SJHS always gives preference to teachers who want to and are qualified to coach a sport. In the event an on-campus coach is unavailable, walk-on coaches are hired. All coaching positions are seasonal, and no coach is guaranteed more than one season of employment. Coaches are renewed or hired by the administration in consultation with the athletic administrator and athletic director. Because coaches are at-will employees, they do not enjoy the same contractual rights as a teacher.
