VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS
The Visual and Performing Arts Department of SJHS believes the study and practice of the arts enrich the development of all students. The arts are an expression of our relationship with God, one another, and nature. The arts allow students to communicate their dreams and ideals through sight, sound, and language. The arts encourage student collaboration in their production and performance. The arts require complex thinking as students demonstrate technique. The arts celebrate cultural diversity and give students the opportunity to share their gifts and visions with their community. Skill, knowledge, and appreciation for the arts do not develop automatically; they are acquired through a systematic program of instruction.
Goals and Objectives
 |
Arts education provides unique skills. Students develop the ability to perform, produce, comprehend, and evaluate aesthetic works. They acquire these skills through instruction by dedicated professionals. Learning in the arts includes the development of visual sensibilities, an understanding the cultural function of art, the ability to make informed judgments about art, and understand the basis on which those assessments rest. In this context, art deals with emotional, subjective, and intuitive responses, as well as intellectual and objective responses.
Based on the California Visual and Performing Arts Standards the department maintains these objectives:
Artistic Perception- To develop in each student an attitude of ease with the arts, and the capacity to enjoy aesthetic expression in diverse forms.
Creative Expression- To help students think, feel, and act creatively by performing or producing works with a variety of skills, media, and techniques.
Historical and Cultural Context- To help the student develop an openness to our art heritage through the study of master artists, past and present.
Aesthetic Valuing- To provide opportunities to critique themselves and other artists on the basis of aesthetic qualities.
Connections, Relationships, Applications- To apply the study of the arts across the curriculum and into diverse careers.
