ENGLISH

The Saint Joseph High School Department supports the philosophy of the school through its dedication to academic excellence and by encouraging students to consider Christianity as an integral part of the world’s literature. Course offerings are designed not only to meet the requirements of the colleges and universities to which the students apply, but also to enrich their lives through exposure to great writers and thinkers of all ages. Furthermore, the course offerings provide the students with practice in reading, writing, and communication skills.


Goals and Objectives
1. To enrich the students’ lives through exposure to great writers and thinkers of all ages
a. By exposing students to a variety of authors reflective of a multi-cultural world
b. By introducing students to great literature and encouraging aesthetic appreciation through literature
c. By inspiring students to pursue independent reading for lifelong personal enrichment.
d. By guiding the students toward valuing literature as a source of Christian insight, in order that they will begin perceiving, criticizing, and intellectualizing about their world in the light of the Gospel values.
2. To work toward increasing proficiency in reading, writing, and communication skills necessary to function successfully in personal, social, and professional life.
a. By teaching English as a unified and sequential subject, the major components of which are language, literature and composition.
b. By emphasizing that both speaking and writing involve a thinking process and specific techniques in order to effectively communicate a subject to an audience
c. By including in the study of language, pronunciation, appropriateness of usage, grammar and syntax, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, and language as a symbolic system.
d. By providing the opportunity to practice writing, listening, and speaking skills on each grade level through a variety of activities.
3. To encourage professional competence and expertise in support of academic excellence
a. By requiring attendance at workshops and conferences, and by encouraging additional education.
b. By providing professional reading materials, memberships, and funding toward conference attendance.
