1. The first goal of the department is to prepare students acquire the practical skills needed to live and succeed in society. These skills range from the intricacies of managing a home, finding a job, caring for a child, cooking a nutritious repertoire of meals, consumer awareness, and planning for the future.
2. The second goal of the department is to help students become aware of the tremendous career possibilities that the Family and Consumer Sciences field holds, particularly when students further their education. This goal is facilitated by bringing in speakers who share their experiences in various careers, such as Child Development or Fashion Merchandizing. Some courses make field trips to specific institutes and places core to the courses as a way of introducing students to a variety of possible jobs.
3. Another integral goal of the department is to impart Christian values to the students as they learn skills. The department aims to teach each student that family is core to society and Christianity, and thus, it is essential for them to develop the lifestyle and home atmosphere reflective of their values. Students should become aware that skills they learn can help to provide a healthier, happier, and more loving home life.
4. The department’s final goal is to provide opportunities for each student to develop her potential skills. The department offers different levels of instruction for specific skills in order to meet the needs of all students.
