SOCIAL STUDIES
The Social Studies Department adheres to the philosophy of the school as presented in the Saint Joseph High School Handbook and the ESLR's (Expected Student Learning Results.) The student will be exposed to a diverse body of knowledge and methodology dealing with society, its members, organizations and complex interrelationships, while functioning in our secular society. Emphasis is placed on the development of responsible citizenship in light of Christian Values that will affect the nation and world in the ever increasing complexity of our interdependent existence.

Studies those factors which have shaped the experience of humankind, strives to develop in the student an understanding in the areas of political, geo-political, cultural, sociological, and global influence so that she will be able to participate with the whole of society in its present and changing forms.
a. By ensuring that the students understand, analyze and evaluate historical events and relationships between the past and present.
b. By encouraging identification of problems in current society. |

Will encourage the development of social awareness by placing emphasis on the relationship of course material with the interdependence of current global and community affairs.
a. By developing a sense of tolerance and acceptance in understanding the differences within the human community.
b. To bring about integration with the global community through use of printed matter, audio-visuals and computers.

Studies the relationship of the individual ethical and moral responsibilities in the areas of citizenship and social justice while encouraging active participation in today's society.
a. The student will be able to demonstrate a Christian understanding of the Gospel as a basis for active participation in society. |

Emphasizes the development of skills enabling students to collect and process data and information increasing the ability to utilize historical reasoning, critical thinking and analysis.
a. To develop in the student, workable skills in the areas of dealing with maps, charts, graphs, surveys etc.
b. To recognize and identify propaganda and the part it plays in today's society through critical and analytical thought processes.
