ASB - ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY

Everyone who is registered at Saint Joseph High School is a member of the Associated Student Body or ASB. A student body card is issued at the beginning of the school year. As a member of the ASB each girl has the responsibility of fulfilling the requirements of a student and of sharing in the privileges and benefits awarded to a student.

Co - Curricular Program
Co-curricular activities and interscholastic athletic events are designed not as an adjunct to the high school program, but as an essential part of the educational goals of Saint Joseph High School. These activities are organized as opportunities for the school community to apply the teachings of the Catholic Church to human relationships. Administration, parents, staff and students work together to permeate activities and athletics with Gospel values.

Transportation to School-Related Activities
Effective January 2006, a new law requires students who are issued a provisional driver license on or after January 1, 2005 to be accompanied and supervised by a licensed parent, guardian or other licensed driver at least 25 years of age when transporting passengers under 20 years of age (for the first twelve months) or when driving between 11pm and 5 am (for the first twelve months).

When transportation in accordance with this law is not available, the law requires that students carry a note signed by legal parent/guardian explaining why the student must drive and when the necessity will end.  For school related activities, the note can be signed by a school administrator and include a reason for the school-related activity and the date when the activity will end.  When these notes are required due to the hours of a particular activity, required forms will be distributed to students at the end of the activity or event.

Eligibility
A student can apply what she has learned at school through various activities and interesting projects sponsored by these groups. A student must meet cumulative GPA requirements and maintain the requirement each quarter to participate in or try out for a co-curricular activity. A list of possible participants in any extra-curricular activity must be submitted to the Assistant Principal for Academics, Discipline and the Business Office before tryouts or auditions.

A student will be ineligible for participation in co-curricular activities if she does not maintain the minimum cumulative GPA at each grading period, specified as follows:

Associated Student Body Executive Officers                                   3.0 cumulative GPA
Student Council--Class Officers and Section Officers                  2.5 cumulative GPA
Athletes and other co-curricular positions                                       2.0 cumulative GPA

The student will remain ineligible for the entire quarter. The GPA requirement must be maintained at each grading period, and before a student may even tryout or run for a position on a team.  Additionally, students must obtain clearance from the Dean of Students and the Business Office.

Student Government
Student Government at Saint Joseph High School, the elected body of student leaders, represents the entire student body. The purpose of student government is to seek out opinions, ideas and school concerns to discuss at Student Council meetings and to take action where necessary. With faculty approval the student leaders set up standards which attempt to put into action the ideas of the students and to solve problems that may arise. These students also serve as leadership role models for the student leaders. Therefore, each member of the student government attends an intensive leadership-training weekend conducted by our graduates, and/or faculty members. Additionally, the newly elected Executive Officers and Senior Class President attend a leadership training seminar. The leadership goals set at this seminar are the focus for the school year. Anyone is welcome to attend weekly Student Council meetings, but only the members are allowed to vote on issues.

The voting members of the Student Council include:

  • ASB Officers
  • Class Officers and the Section Representatives
  • GAA and Pep Squad Representatives
  • Club Representatives others as designated in the School Constitution

Moderators are encouraged to discuss the limit set for Christmas and End of Year gifts. Students must adhere to $30.00 at Christmas and $70.00 for the End of Year.

Elections

Any student running for an ASB, class or club office must obtain the signatures indicated on the petition form, and must satisfy the eligibility requirement. GAA elections are held separately and include lunch hour speeches in the MPB.  Interested students are expected to attend and maintain respectful assembly behavior.  These students must demonstrate the qualities of leadership, maturity and responsibility. They must abide by all rules and regulations.

OTHER STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Dance Regulations
The following regulations are given to the chaperones and security guards. Each student from Saint Joseph High School and her guests should be familiar with these regulations. Important Note: Saint Joseph High School students without ID cards will be issued a “misconduct.”  Students attending any dance will be subject to a search of their property.  Students attending any dance are subject to search of property and hereby have parental consent to participate in a breathalyzer test when requested to do so.

Admission—7:30 to 9:00pm. No admission after 9:00 p.m. and no one may leave before 11:00 p.m. Any student with a valid reason for coming to the dance after 9:00 p.m., must make arrangements with the appropriate Dean of Students before the night of the dance.

All students wishing to be admitted must show a Catholic High School ID to gain entrance into a SJHS dance. Students from any Catholic High School, with proper identification, will be admitted. St. John Bosco students may not bring guests or dates without a valid Catholic High School ID. Saint Joseph students may not bring guests or dates to St. John Bosco dances without a valid Catholic High School ID.

A Saint Joseph student who wishes to bring non-Catholic high school guests may purchase three guest passes. Guest passes cost $1 each and will be available at break and lunch from the bookstore on the Wednesday and Thursday prior to the dance. On the guest pass, the Saint Joseph student will sign her name, the name and school of her guest. This will be checked at the gate, and the guest will be asked to show a picture ID before signing. Any SJHS student whose guest misbehaves will be responsible for the consequences of the guest's actions.

The dance dress code is the same as casual dress days.

  • Students are asked to dress appropriately.
  • Appropriate walking shorts are allowed at all dances. Shorts must reach mid-thigh.
  • Any student dressed improperly may be refused entrance into a dance and proper disciplinary action may be taken.  Parents/guardians will be contacted.
SJHS reserves the right to determine what is inappropriate attire. At "theme dances," dress is determined by the dance theme. Out of uniforms may be issued.

The following will be enforced at dances:

  • Students leaving the dance after dismissal time will not be re-admitted.
  • Students will not be allowed to go to the parking lot for any reason.
  • Student may be asked for identification at any time.
  • Those who exhibit rude or unacceptable behavior will be asked to leave the dance and proper disciplinary action will be taken.
  • Two security officers are on duty. One security officer will be stationed at the front gate at all times. They are available if any situation should arise that would warrant their assistance.
  • No smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages or use of narcotics of any kind will be allowed. Students and/or guests with alcohol on their breaths will be refused admittance or escorted from the dance.
  • Parents will be called and proper disciplinary action will be taken.
  • Faculty members and parent chaperones have full authority to admit, refuse or dismiss any student from the dance.
  • Chaperones will contact parents of any Saint Joseph students who are asked to leave a dance and proper disciplinary action will be taken.
  • Saint Joseph High School does not allow any type of dancing that may bring bodily harm to the students, regardless of the type of dance. Therefore, slam dancing, lifting, and similar activities are not allowed.
  • Likewise, dancing that is highly suggestive is not allowed. Inappropriate dancing is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
  • Parents are asked to pick up their daughters promptly at 11:30 p.m.

If a student is left waiting for a ride, parents will be charged $5 for every minute after 11:45 pm.

Should a parent/guardian or student have any questions regarding dances or activities at St. John Bosco High School, they are asked to contact SJB directly.

Grad Nite
Grad Nite is a private celebration at Disneyland/California Adventure open to high school seniors and their guests.  Saint Joseph High School seniors who are in good financial and disciplinary standing may attend.  They may invite one guest.  SJHS underclassmen are not permitted to attend as guests of SJHS seniors.  Seniors are responsible for all expenses including admission to both parks, dinner and mandatory bus transportation.  A strict dress code will be enforced.  Students attending are subject to search of property and hereby have parental consent to participate in a breathalyzer test when requested to do so.

Graduation/Senior Awards Ceremony

Saint Joseph High School's senior awards assembly and graduation are formal ceremonies. The school invites seniors to participate in the graduation ceremony if they are students in good standing at the school.  Graduates are asked to limit awards, pins and ornaments on their graduation gowns to those representing SJHS awards only.  Four tickets are issued per graduate prior to the Awards Ceremony and six tickets are issued per graduate prior to the Graduation Ceremony; there is no extra ticket sign up sheet.

Homecoming and Winter Formal

Rules and regulations delineated for Prom will be upheld for the Winter Formal and Homecoming.  Students attending are subject to search of property and hereby have parental consent to participate in a breathalyzer test when requested to do so.

Powder Puff

Powder Puff football is a friendly game of class unity between seniors and juniors.   The practices are held at Saint Joseph High School, and each team practices only 10 times, after school.  The game is held at St. John Bosco High School, usually on a Thursday in late February/March.  The head coach is the class moderator, and only fathers/guardians may be asked to assist as coaching staff.  All participants must have a physical form on file prior to participating and be in good standing.  Students attending are subject to search of property and hereby have parental consent to participate in a breathalyzer test when requested to do so.

Because this game is meant to be friendly and to build camaraderie between the seniors and juniors, behavior that does not adhere to SJHS's code of expected good and decent behavior, and committed by either class, will result in the automatic cancellation of the game.  Weather, too, can be cause for cancellation.  If the game is cancelled, it will not be rescheduled.

Prom

Only Saint Joseph or Saint John Bosco Seniors may purchase bids to attend the prom.  Students from both schools will adhere to the following guidelines:

  • The prom is the annual co-sponsored dinner dance of both Saint Joseph High School and Saint John Bosco High School. The Prom is intended for a senior and her gentleman escort only.
  • All guests must sign a contract agreeing to abide by all rules and regulations.
  • It is a senior event; therefore, only seniors may buy bids. If a SJHS student invites a guest no longer in high school, the student needs to have a note from her parent, indicating knowledge of the fact, in order to buy the bid.
  • There will be a curfew time for arrival and departure. Arrival time is no later than one-half hour before the dinner is scheduled to begin; departure time is no earlier than 11:30 p.m.
  • The prom committee will consist only of the senior class officers and school appointed advisors. The senior class presidents of both schools will co-chair the meetings.
  • No refunds will be given once the prom bid is purchased. If a student sells his/her bid to another student, the advisor must be notified of this exchange.
  • Any student who arrives after the set arrival time will be sent home and a telephone call will be made to the parents. Also, a phone call will be made to the parents of any student who has not arrived by the arrival time.
  • Any student not properly attired for the evening will be sent home, and their parents will be called.
  • Students and/or guests with alcohol on their breath will be refused admittance and escorted from the dance and proper disciplinary action will be taken. Smoking or the use of narcotics of any kind will not be allowed.
  • Any student who has been asked to withdraw from Saint Joseph High School may not attend Prom.
  • All students attending will be subject to search and have parental consent to participate in a breathalyzer test.
