CLUBS AND GROUPS

Each year clubs are initiated and organized according to student interest. The clubs on campus exist in order to insure active participation and involvement of members. Students are encouraged to join clubs. Campus clubs also participate in a variety of Christian service activities and projects during the course of the year.


Academic Decathlon
Purpose: To prepare for academic competition. Qualifications: Moderator approval required.

Amnesty International
Purpose: To promote human rights around the world.

Art Club
Purpose: To expose students to various fields of visual and performing arts. Also, to create an art magazine to expose the talents as well as to partake in a Christian Service project.
Qualifications: Moderator approval required.

California Scholarship Federation (CSF)
Purpose: To foster high standards of scholarship, service and citizenship.
Qualifications: All seniors, juniors and sophomores with at least 3 A s in college preparatory subjects. CSF is open to freshmen in their second semester. Freshmen are then called affiliate members.

Chess Club
Purpose: To teach the basics skills, rules and strategies of chess. To encourage students who play the game of chess to better their skills.

JAM
Purpose: To foster appreciation of Japanese animation.

CSJ Circle
Purpose: To be of service to the SJHS school community through campus ministry, Christian Service and leadership. Qualifications: Interest in and skills that enhance the mission of SIHS.

Drama Club
Purpose: To promote, encourage and educate students in the field of Theater Arts.

Dance Club
Purpose: To offer students the opportunity to learn specific dance techniques and to perform as a group at rallies and other school functions.

Environmental/Science Club
Purpose: To spread understanding to the SJHS community about world ecology, recycling and maintaining the environment. Qualifications: All are welcome to join.

French Club
Purpose: To enable students to gain a deeper appreciation of the language and culture of French speaking countries. Qualifications: Students presently or formerly enrolled in a French class.

French Honor Society
Purpose: To foster and encourage the study of the French language and culture.
Qualifications: Two full years of French with a grade of A- or better. Enrollment is by moderator/teacher invitation only.

Girls’ Athletic Association (GAA)
Purpose: To promote the high ideals of sportsmanship and school spirit and to support the Athletic Teams, Cheerleaders, the Drill Team and the Song Leaders in competition.

Habitat for Humanity
Purpose: To interact with Habitat for Humanity, to conduct fundraisers that benefit the causes of Habitat for Humanity, and to raise awareness and action for the less fortunate.

HOPE Club (Helping Other People Everywhere)
Purpose: To plan activities, to promote mission awareness among members of the student body and to encourage them to contribute to the needs of local communities.


Italian Club
Purpose: To enable students to gain a deeper appreciation of the language and culture of Italian speaking countries. 


Junior Statesmen of America (JSA)/Speech and Debate Club

Purpose: To promote and encourage the art of debate and to prepare students for tournament speaking and participation in the Southern California Debate League. Students learn a variety of speech methods including dramatic interpretation, persuasiveness, duo interpretation, etc.

Kiwins
Purpose: To provide service to the school and community as an affiliate of the Kiwanis Club.

Latin Honor Society
Purpose: To foster and encourage the study of Latin language.
Qualifications:  Maintain an A average in all Latin courses.

Models for Christ
Purpose: To promote the spiritual life of its members through weekly meetings that include praying the Rosary, attending lunchtime Masses in the Chapel, and discussion of different aspects of Catholicism that are relevant to the lives of Saint Joseph High School students.

Model United Nations
Purpose: To increase awareness of world issues. Qualifications: Any student who is interested.

National Honor Society (NHS)
Purpose: To stimulate a desire to render service, create enthusiasm for scholarship, promote leadership and develop character. Qualifications: Membership only by invitation is extended to sophomores, juniors and seniors who maintain outstanding scholarship, character, leadership and service.

Newspaper, Jester Journal & Jester News Show

Purpose: To promote school spirit by informing Saint Joseph High School students about school activities, as well as other topics of interest, and to promote interest in the field of video production. 

Peer Helpers
Purpose: To provide help and assistance to fellow students; to assist with several guidance programs; to lend support to transfer students and to serve as leaders to freshmen peer families. Qualifications: Membership is selective. Students are chosen by the Assistant Principal of Counseling Services with approval by the faculty.

Red Cross
Purpose: To organize and implement two annual blood drives on campus and to spread the awareness and importance of donating blood.

SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
Purpose: To encourage youth not to drink and drive in addition to raising substance abuse awareness. .

Spanish Club
Purpose: To help students gain a deeper appreciation of the language and culture of Spanish speaking countries. Qualifications: Any student presently or formerly enrolled in a Spanish class.

Spanish Honor Society

Purpose:  To foster and encourage the study of the Spanish language and culture. 
Qualifications: Maintain minimum 3.5 GPA, have received A- or better in all Spanish coursework, and take one advanced Spanish course (Spanish IV, AP Spanish Language, or AP Spanish Literature).
