Selection Process

Previous and prospective team members are selected on ability and on attitude that must be cooperative for a team unit. The selection process of a prospective team member is done by observance of the team from her previous season and a tryout period. No one is guaranteed a position on a team because of past participation. For CIF sports, a 10-day tryout period prior to the start of the season is allowed for those athletes who have not previously played that sport at our school on any level. Returning athletes begin their tryout on the first day of allowable practice sanctioned by the CIF. Students who quit at any time will not be eligible to receive their athletic letter and cannot return to that squad/team at any time.

Athletic Fees and Requirements

The school athletic fee is $150 per team per student. If siblings participate on athletic teams on three or more sports teams, the fee is $400. This fee is non-refundable.  In addition to the athletic fees, the following items are required before a student may actively participate in the athletic season:

  • SJHS Student Athlete’s Contract (see Appendix for copy of form)
  • SJHS Parent Sportsmanship Agreement (see Appendix for copy of form)
  • Agreement Regarding Use of Steroids
  • Athletic Trip Permission and Transportation Release Forms
  • Informed Consent Form
  • Student Athlete Physical Examination Form
  • Athletic Emergency Health and Medical Consent Form

Off Campus Athletic and Activities Transportation

Many activities, competitions and athletic events (i.e., practices and games) are held off campus.  Transportation is provided for many of these events.  However, practices and some tournaments require that each student find her own means of transportation.  In the event a student needs to arrive at a competition or a practice on her own, she may only drive herself.  Whenever two or more students require transportation, an adult must drive these students to and from the event.  Permission slips will be provided and the driver will need to submit his/her driver's license and automobile insurance.  Adult drivers must be at least 25 years of age, possess a Class C driver’s license and be insured (a $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident minimum limit of Liability for Bodily Injury and Property Damage is the minimum recommended coverage limit for archdiocesan purposes).  One seat belt must be provided for and used by each vehicle occupant.  Copies of the driver’s license and certificate of insurance must be on file in the office.

When bus transportation is provided, all students must ride the bus to and from the athletic and/or school sponsored event, unless prior arrangements have been made with the athletic director or moderator for a parent(s)/guardian(s) to drive his/her daughter home from an event.  These arrangements must be made in writing 24 hours in advance.

Transportation is usually provided for:
  • all away athletic competitions
  • pep squad competitions
  • pep squad performance at St. John Bosco rallies
  • Bosco football and basketball away games
  • Dear Neighbor program activities
  • field trips
  • retreats

Off-On Campus Athletic and Pep Squad Supervision

The cross country and track teams begin their daily practice on campus, or at St. John Bosco High School.  Since these are distance competitions, their daily runs take them off campus into the surrounding neighborhoods within a few miles of SJHS or SJBHS with adult supervision.  Practice locations are subject to change, and parents/guardians will be notified.

Every coach is responsible to remain with his/her team or squad until the last student is picked up by a parent/guardian.  No student should ever be left unsupervised on campus.  If a student is left unsupervised, parents/guardians are asked to contact the athletic director or the assistant principal for activities/operations.

Pep Squad Rallies and Competitions
The Cheer and Song athletes provide their own transportation to all their competitions and to the SJB rallies they attend. These athletes will be provided with bus transportation to and from all away league contests they attend with the SJ volleyball and basketball teams, as well as the SJB football and basketball teams, with the exception of the frosh cheer squad.

Junior Varsity and Varsity Jackets
The following items are the only things allowed on the Saint Joseph High School letterman jacket:

  • junior varsity and/or varsity letter
  • sport and bar emblems on the letter
  • athlete's name, school, athletic team

  • year of graduation
  • league, school, or CIF patches awarded by SJHS
Athletes may choose between the wool body jacket, and the leather sleeves or the wool body and sleeves jacket with hood. All embroidery on the jacket should be done in script, block or full block .

Saint Joseph High School Athletic Bags and Equipment
All athletes are required to buy an athletic bag to use at all athletic practices and contests. Outside bags will not be permitted. Bags can be purchased from the bookstore and will be sold at all preseason parent meetings. The athletic bags will have the school name on them. Athletes may only add the following to their bags:
  • name and athletic team(s)

  • school, or
  • CIF patches that are awarded from SJHS
Athletic bags must be placed in the athletic lockers before school begins each day. Athletic bags and equipment may not be carried around campus or taken to class .

Athletic Locks
Each athlete will be provided with an athletic locker. All athletes must purchase the SJHS lock from the bookstore. No other locks will be allowed.

Athletic Attire
Athletic uniforms are property of SJHS and are loaned to students for the athletic season. Fines will be assessed for uniforms turned in late or for lost and or damaged uniforms. Athletes may be required to purchase practice attire.

CIF Policy Regarding Assaults
Important Note: CIF Constitution and by-laws state that, "Any student who physically assaults a person in a game, or an event official, shall be banned from interscholastic athletics for the remainder of the student's eligibility. A student may, after 18 calendar months from the date of the incident, apply for reinstatement or eligibility to the State Executive Director."

Additionally, any parents/guardians or spectators who are verbally or physically abusive to a visiting team or game official will be ejected from the game.  A second incident will necessitate banning the spectator from all further athletic competitions for the remainder of the year.

Sportsmanship Code for Spectators

The CIF, CAA, and Saint Joseph High School expect each athlete to exhibit good sportsmanship, and to enjoy her games while learning specific athletic skills.  For us to work effectively with our athletes, we need all spectators to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Spectators are required to maintain a high degree of sportsmanship during athletic contests.
  • Spectators must, at al times, remain in the designated seating areas while a contest is in progress.
  • Spectators may not confront an official, coach or player before, during or after an athletic contest.
  • Spectators suspected of throwing any objects onto the playing surface of an athletic contest will be immediately ejected from the premises, and may be barred from attendance at remaining games.
  • Spectators may not make antagonistic or deprecating yells directed at the opposing school or officials.
  • Spectators may not use noise makers of any kind, and only organized school bands may play (before the contest, during the timeouts, quarter breaks and half time).
  • Spectators actions may be determined by the officials or school administration to be detrimental to the playing of the game and may result in a forfeiture of that contest.

Since sportsmanship is an expectation, all in attendance at events are to allow the players play, the coaches coach, the officials officiate, and spectators are to be positive.

Discipline Policies and Procedures in Athletics

There may be times when an athlete’s behavior is called into question.  Behavioral matters are handled in the same way as they are handled in the classroom.  A process is followed in the correction of behavior.  The first level of action is to speak with the student.  Second, if that is not successful, an infraction may be issued.  Third, a misconduct/is issued.  Further behavior problems will result in further disciplinary action.    Discipline Policies and Procedures published in the Student Services section of the handbook regarding student behavior and discipline apply in all athletic activities and events, and are highlighted below:

Infractions:  These are issued by the coach, signed by the student, and are accumulated throughout the school year.  Infractions may be issue for:

  • Using make-up/nail polish/combing hair during a practice or game
  • Not attending conditioning
  • Coming late to practice (Student Council, CSJ Circle, Peer Helpers, and pre-arranged tutoring/testing with teachers are excused due to school sponsored involvement.  Retreats are excused.)
  • Unexcused absence from practice
  • No absence note to the coach if a practice or game is missed
  • Littering
  • Doing tasks other than those assigned by the coach
  • Leaving personal belongings unattended
  • Bringing food into the locker room
  • Not returning uniform or equipment as requested

Misconducts are issued by the coach and signed by the student athlete for persistence in the above or for more serious offenses.

Discipline Process

  • Verbal warning
  • If actions do not improve, parents will be notified and student will receive and infraction
  • Student may be benched
  • Student may receive a misconduct and parental notification
  • Student may receive a disciplinary probation
  • Student may forfeit my privilege of playing on the team
Student may be subject to further disciplinary action as defined in Discipline Policies and Procedures in the Student Services section of the handbook.
