THE ARTS

Visual and Performing Arts Program Breakdown
The performing and visual arts program at Saint Joseph High School includes both instructional and extra curricular activities in:

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts program offers a variety of classes in both technique and appreciation. Coursework includes instruction in various media, two museum visits, and student participation in artistic contests. Each spring students throughout the school produce works for exhibition at the school’s Visual and Performing Arts Day. The Visual Arts teacher assists students in portfolio development, offering workshops in photography, ceramics, painting, and sculpture. The instructor also attends workshops in materials and practices at local museums each fall.

Music

The Music program provides instruction and performance opportunities. The program teaches both instrumental and vocal technique along with music appreciation. Students develop the tools to analyze and apply music theory in music appreciation. The vocal program serves more than 100 students through classes and after-school programs. These students share their talent in concert, at school liturgies, and around the community. The choir participates in choral festivals each spring, providing exposure beyond the school community. The instrumental ensembles (Handbells, Steel Drums and Percussion) provide extra-curricular options for music students.

Dance

The dance program offers students the opportunity to explore the various dance forms and styles of ballet, modern, jazz, and dances of world cultures. Students will:

• understand the role of dance throughout history and culture as a vehicle for human expression;
• refine their movement technique, control, and artistic skills necessary for expressive dance performance;
• learn and understand basic kinesiology to incorporate safe practices and care of the body as an instrument;
• study choreographic principles and showcase their skills in a stage performance each semester.
After-school cultural ensembles in Folklorico and Filipino dance bring dance to a wider community.

Drama

The Drama program offers students diverse opportunities in the art of live performance. Classes provide an overview of acting, design, directing, and production; Students study theatre history, professional theatre, and playwrights from around the world. The production program features four large productions and three student-showcases a year which employ student directors, designers, playwrights, and performers. Our drama students compete in various programs for trophies, scholarships, and recognition throughout the state.
