Grades 9 - 11
Southern California Academy of Sciences has a research training program for future scientists.
If you would like to become acquainted with some of the rigors and rewards of scientific research while working with a professional scientist director/mentor in her laboratory, go to jsd.claremont.edu for more information and then go to the C/C Center for an application. Deadline is May 30.

Boston University Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS) is a six-week residential program that encourages a deep personal involvement with the creative elements in mathematics and fosters interaction between you and the larger community of research mathematicians and scientists. The Brickfish College Basketball Smackdown $500.00 Scholarship is available to students who are at least 14 years of age or older. To be eligible for this award, you must submit a blog, audio or videoclip telling why your favorite college basketball teamwill win the March basketball tournament. Blogs mujst be no longer that 1000 words and video and audio clips must be no longer than 30 seconds. For more information about this and many other scholarships, visit www.fastweb.com.

The Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG) has programs available at Amherst, Bryn Mawr, Emory, UCLA, UC Berkeley, University of Michigan, Vassar, Princeton, and the University of Texas for students who have scored at the 95th percentile or above, and in the gifted range on the PSAT, SAT, ACT, or SSATB. St. George's University in Grenada has a 10-day premed and a pre-veterinary medicine summer program for high school students. College credit is available. The educational experience will be further enhanced with off-campus excursions including snorkeling, dolphin watching, hiking and island touring. Go to www.sgu.edu for information.

Georgetown University has several summer programs to help prepare you for success in college Among them are International Relations, American Politics & Public Affairs, National Security & Counterintelligence, Leadership in a Global Economy, Journalism, Performing Arts, Environmental and Computer Science. Applications are available in the College/Career Center or can be downloaded at: summer.georgetown.edu . Limited partial tuition scholarships are available. Early applications are encouraged.

Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles is offering Making + Meaning: The Foundation Program in Architecture July 14 - August 15. It introduces students to the language and processes of architecture, allowing you the opportunity to imagine, design and build architectural projects in a studio atmosphere. Grade 10
Would you like to spend an all expense-paid week, including travel, this summer at Carleton College in Minnesota for a liberal arts experience? If so, ask your Academic Adviser to nominate you. Students of African American descent or students interested in African American culture are encouraged to apply.

Grades 10 - 11
UC Davis has 6-week summer research opportunities in the biological and natural sciences for 40 high achieving sophomores or juniors. Substantial fee reductions are available for students on a needs based sliding scale. Online applications are available at http://ysp.ucdavis.edu.

Grade 11
The University of California, Berkeley is offering 70 high achieving African-American Juniors from across the state an exceptional opportunity to participate in a three-day college preparatory event in mid and end of July. Come to the College/Career Center for more info.

UC Berkeley has an awesome and free program to help Latina, African American, and/or Native American Juniors with at least a 3.5 GPA, fill out college applications, help with personal statements, and find scholarships. Visit www.stileshall.org.

In mid July

University of Southern California Summer Seminars, including "Photography as Art," and "Video Game Design," allows students the chance to live on campus and sample college life, study with USC instructors and students from around the world, and earn 3 units of college credit. George Washington University
in Washington DC has 10-Day Mini Courses in Criminal Law, Photojournalism, Election Politics, and Biomedical Engineering. Come to the College/Career Center for more information.

SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is sponsoring the Antranik Geuvjehizian Memorial Scholarship which will give $1,000 awards to two college-bound Saint Joseph graduates. Visit the C/C Center to pick up application. Deadline is May 12.

There will be a
Job Fair for 16-22 year olds on Thursday, May 15 at Lakewood Youth Center at Del Valle Park from 3:00 - 5:30 pm. Companies will be on site offering full-time, part-time, and summer job positions. Take a picture ID, Social Security Number, name & address of past employers, and a black or blue ink pen.

The Sallie Mae Fund Scholarship Program has applications and eligibility information for "Unmet Need" for students needing financial aid at www.salliemaefund.org.Deadline is May 31.

The Motion Picture Industry Joint Electrician Apprenticeship Committee (JAC) will be accepting applications for apprenticeships from June 2 - June 6 from 8:00 - 5:00 pm. Gateway to Greatness Scholarships (provided by the Long Beach Rotary) will provide one semester of tuition at Long Beach City College to 100 graduates of Lakewood and Long Beach schools. Applications are available in the C/C Center. Due July 1, 2008.

The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) Los Angeles Chapter is giving $1,000 - $3,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to take journalism courses and/or pursuing journalism as a career. Universal Technical Institute / NASCAR Technical Institute / Motorcycle and Marie Mechanics Institutes will provide tuition grants-in-aid of $2500 to students who seek to enroll at one of their schools who show financial need and who reflect a true commitment to converting their passion for automobiles, trucks, motorcycles or boats into a career as a professional technician. Applications are due five weeks prior to your scheduled start date at one of the institutes.

The AES Engineers organization is offering a $500.00 scholarship to be awarded based on character. This will be determined by an essay of no more than 1000 words.
