STUDENT SERVICES
Spiritual Guidance
In Catholic education, the development of values is essential and spiritual guidance receives priority.
- The Campus Ministry Program, coordinated by the Campus Minister, facilitates faith development within the school community and assists each student in taking personal responsibility for her own faith formation. Retreats, Eucharistic and a variety of prayer and penance services, and Christian Service opportunities are built into the curriculum. Spiritual guidance on an individual basis is available from the school chaplains, visiting Archdiocesan priests, and dedicated members of the staff.
- Pastoral Outreach Ministry Program, under the direction of the school chaplains, serves the pastoral needs of the school community with a special concern for families of students, administration, faculty, staff, and alumnae. These needs may include spiritual guidance and support, prayer, and special responses for illness, accidents, and grief. Prayer request forms are available in the school office.

Personal Counseling
A school counselor is available on campus for students and/or parents, to respond to home, personal, or school-related problems. If the need exists for more in-depth counseling, a list of agencies and/or therapists whose philosophies are consistent with our teachings is available through the Assistant Principal for Counseling.
Student Review Team
The Student Review Team, under the direction of the Assistant Principal for Counseling Services, serves as a proactive intervention process that assists any student who is struggling academically, behaviorally, and/or emotionally so that the school and the family can work together toward positive changes in that young person’s life.
Present at an SRT meeting are the assistant principals for counseling and student services, the academic advisor, the dean of students, along with the student and her parent/guardian. The student and her family are given an overview of the student’s academic record, behavioral performance, and attendance history. The assistant principal defines concerns and the team looks for ways to assist the student in making some positive changes, i.e. improve attendance; work on following rules; organize tutoring, seek counseling support or outside community services, if warranted.
Peer Helpers
Under the supervision of the Assistant Principal for Counseling Services, peer helpers are available each day, before school, during lunch, and, with permission of classroom teachers, during class. They are trained to support peers in crisis, and they must follow specific guidelines and ethical standards.
Personal Counseling
Since each person is unique, the personal counseling program provides opportunities to assist students to understand and cope with themselves, their environment, and their interpersonal relationships. All students are urged to refer their personal problems to the school counselor who is available throughout the day for individual counseling. Support groups are also facilitated by the counselor to meet specific student concerns, i.e. grief counseling. The school counselor is specially trained in school counseling procedures enabling her to handle home, personal, or school-related problems. The school counselor, after consultation with a student’s parent(s), may refer a student to an outside agency or therapist whose philosophies are consistent with Catholic teachings.
Teacher Advisor Program
As part of the Counseling Department, the Teacher Advisor Program serves as a setting for the transmission of basic information needed by all students prior to graduation from high school. Just as reading, writing, and mathematics are considered basic skills, so is information about getting a job, entering college, preparing credentials, taking and interpreting tests, etc. The Assistant Principal for Counseling Services is responsible for developing these basic concepts, skills, and principles in a scope and sequence required of all students. They are best ordered and presented in such a way that one learning sequence builds upon another. The teacher advisor group is one way to see that students get exposed to the same basic learning. These essential skills are taught systematically to all students and not randomly to those who happen to appear in the counselor's office.
The Role of the Teacher Advisor
- The Teacher Advisor acts as an advisor for each of his/her advisees in the following capacity:
- to meet with his/her advisees during section-guidance period to discuss school procedures and other suggested topics; distribute test results; complete questionnaires, etc.;
- to assist the advisee in planning the following year's academic program;
- to direct the advisee to areas of career education and other forms of counseling, as necessary; and
- to aid the principal and administration in carrying out administrative directive or official business related to his/her advisees.
|
The Teacher Advisor also supervises and assists the section representative in planning and executing class and student council business. Teacher Advisors also:
- attend section-guidance periods;
- assist and attend all class activities and meetings;
- aid the section representative by encouraging and supporting student participation in extra-curricular class and school activities;
- take responsibility for care of section room, student lockers, and all school property;
- make available bulletins, schedules, and school activities calendar;
- read, clarify, and explain the Parent/Student Handbook at least once a year to the advisees;
- accompany students to assemblies and to supervise their behavior.
