HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES

At the beginning of the school year the parent/guardian authorizes minor first aid and medicine to be administered when necessary. They will be contacted if there is a question regarding the seriousness or complications from injury or illness. All entering students must have current medical/emergency information on file prior to admittance.

In the event of an emergency information may be obtained by dialing (562) 925-9073, ext. 890.

Accidents

Unusual illness or accidents occurring at school must be reported immediately to the school office. A written report of the circumstances and witnesses should be made and filed.

AlDS/HIV

Infection with AIDS in and of itself is not a reason to exclude a student from Saint Joseph High School. Alternate educational arrangements may be made for the infected student. Each instance of AIDS involving a student shall be treated in a strictly confidential manner. Decisions regarding such occurrences shall take into account Christian concern and compassion, community health and well being, and individual privacy and needs. Each situation shall be analyzed and responded to as required by its particular facts. Decisions regarding admission or retention of students should involve a confidential consultation. Specific procedures for this are found in the Archdiocesan Handbook. The school will make every effort to educate staff, students, and parents about communicable diseases. See also “Student Accident Insurance” under General School Policies.

Communicable Diseases

Any student diagnosed with a communicable disease must receive a release from her doctor before she will be admitted back to school. The release must be in writing and have the signature of the student’s doctor. Some communicable diseases require a report to the Public Health Department. SJHS follows the guidelines applicable to all students in public and private schools.

Earthquake/Emergency Preparedness Information.

Saint Joseph High School has implemented emergency disaster policies, plans and procedures. Students and faculty have been prepared and are aware of "duck-and-cover" procedures and how to react when or if an emergency occurs.

The most frequently asked question from both students and parents is about the student release procedure. Below you will find information on “What to Do in a Before School or After School Earthquake” and the "Student Release Procedures."

Departure from School

If, upon departure from school, students are closer to their home than the school site, they should proceed to their homes. If students feel that school is the safest place and no one is at home, they may return to school. If a student returns to school, she should report to the school administration office for instructions.

En Route to School

If students have left their homes and are en route to school, they should continue to school.

Student Release Procedure

No student will be dismissed from school unless a parent or designated adult comes for her. No student will be allowed to leave with another person unless that person is listed on the student's emergency release form. All parents or designated adults who come for students must sign them out at the temporary release center located at the Chapel Court gate.

Parents or designated adults are to walk in rather than drive. All gates will be locked and only emergency vehicles will be allowed on campus. Signs will be posted to identify the temporary release center. Students who drive may not be released without permission of a parent or designated adult.

We are well prepared to care for your daughter in case of an emergency. All school earthquake procedures have been covered with each student. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school office.

Civil Emergency

Plan A—If School Is Not In Session—If a civil emergency occurs that would impede the safe commute to school of our students, faculty, and staff, school would be canceled for all students until the situation would be under control and safe for commuting. News of this decision to cancel school would be communicated to faculty first, then to news media, and then to the SJHS parent phone tree. The following news stations have been chosen to keep you informed: KABC (AM 790), KFWB (AM 980), and KNX (AM 1070). The school will also inform the following TV stations: Channels 5 (KTLA), 7 (KABC), 9 (KCAL), and 11 (KTTV). Please do not call the school directly.

Plan B—If School Is In Session—If civil unrest occurs during school time, a "lock down" procedure will be implemented, securing students in the classrooms, and releasing them according to the option selected on the release form.

Leaving for Home: In case of civil unrest that threatens the area surrounding the school, school will be suspended. If safe to do so, the school will immediately dismiss all students who have parental permission to drive, carpool, take the bus, or walk home. All students leaving campus will be checked out according to earthquake releasing procedures above. If there is any hint that travel to a certain area might not be safe, we will hold students at school until the Lakewood Sheriff’s Office assure the school that it is safe for students to travel. Students who need to be picked up at school by a parent or person with parental approval will remain at school until that approved person comes to campus to pick up these students.

Emergency Information Form

Saint Joseph High School must have the following information on file and readily available in case of an emergency:
student's full-name, current residential address, and telephone number;

  • parent/guardians current business/work address and telephone numbers;
    health insurance information; and
  • medication for daily administration and information regarding all current medications taken by daughter,
    and
  • parent/guardian’s email address and mobile phone numbers.

Fire/Earthquake Drills

The Fire Department requires that every school conduct regularly scheduled fire and earthquake drills. Everyone on campus participates in fire and earthquake drills throughout the year. Evacuation plans are displayed in every room in the school.

OFF CAMPUS POLICY

The school insurance policy does not cover students during any off campus lunch period unless they go directly home for lunch and return directly and uninterruptedly. Parents should keep this in mind when deciding whether to give permission to their daughter to leave campus.

MEDICATIONS

California Education Code 49423 states: Any pupil who is required to take, during the regular school day, medication prescribed by a physician, may be assisted by the school nurse or other designated school personnel if the school district has received:
  • a written statement from such physician detailing the name of medicine, thc method, amount, and time schedules by which such medication is to be taken; and
a written statement from the parent or guardian of the pupil indicating the desire that the school assist the pupil in the matter set forth in the physician's statement. The following procedures must be followed when a parent requests that a student be permitted to take medication at school:
No medication can be administered to students without physician and parental consent. (This includes over-the-counter drugs as well as prescription medications.)

  • All medications for students are to be kept in the administrative office or the school health office. Students may not carry medication on their person or keep it in their lockers unless specifically requested by the physician.

  • A “Medication Consent” form must be completed by the physician and signed by the pupil's parents or guardians. New forms must be completed each school year.
Medication must be delivered in the container dispensed by the pharmacy. The information on the label must coincide with the physician's order.

  • The person administering the medication must record the date, time, and dosage on the student's medication record.
