DRAMA
Welcome to another exciting school year of quality Catholic education in the CSJ tradition. The drama program at Saint Joseph is very active. We produce four shows a year with the men of Saint John Bosco. Two productions (one each semester) rehearse and perform on our campus and two rehearse and perform on the Bosco campus. Our offerings in recent years have included musicals (The Seussical, Into the Woods, Once on this Island, and Children’s Letters to God), plays (The Anatomy of Gray, Bocon, and Mother Hicks), and Shakespeare (A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Love’s Labours Lost). Students not only perform but work as assistant directors, crew, designers, painters, to fill all production roles. There are many ways to be involved. In addition to the production program, we also compete in the Drama Teachers of Southern California (DTASC) Festivals. These events allow our students to receive professional adjudication on their skills. The fall festival includes over 60 high schools and 1500 students in acting and technical theatre events. Each spring we prepare our best Shakespeare scenes for competition at the DTASC Shakespeare Festival. The scenes for festival are often student-directed, peer coached, and show off the talent and dedication of our students. Our teams have received many honors at festivals and both our designers and actors have won events.
The Jesters are also an active Thespian Troupe. The International Thespian Society is an honor society for theatre students. This group honors the time, discipline, and service of our students.
