Message from the AP for Curriculum and Instruction

Margaret Meland, currently Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction at Saint
Joseph High School in Lakewood, has worked for over 30 years in the Archdiocese of
Los Angeles and the Diocese of Orange. She served as the principal of St. Matthias High
School in Downey and the Principal of St. Callistus Catholic School in Garden Grove.
She has also served as an Activities Director, and has taught music, religion, math,
English, and Spanish.. She has a Masters Degree in Catholic School Administration from
Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and she also holds a Master of Music
degree in Vocal Arts from USC. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Operatic
Performance from Occidental College, where she created her own major.
As a soprano soloist, some of her favorite oratorio performances have included Bach’s St.
Matthew Passion and St. John Passion, Handel’s Messiah and Brahm’s Requiem. Her
operatic roles have included the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s opera Magic Flute, and
Susana in The Marriage of Figaro. Her singing career has allowed her the opportunity
to travel to Scandinavia, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
She has served on the teaching faculty of the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los
Angeles and Southern California College (Vanguard University) in Costa Mesa.
Her greatest joy is watching students become excited about learning new things and
exploring their gifts and talents!
